General Purpose Rating (GPR)
Shipping is continuously growing industry and trained persons find career in Indian and foreign companies. Attempts are being made to create new openings and facilitate employment of ratings. GP Rating candidates are those who have been trained in both Deck and Engine Room duties. Such ratings may be employed in either department according to the needs of the company. Ratings participate in seamanship activities, cargo handling, maintenance work, operation and maintenance of machinery.
The 16 WEEKS Pre Sea Training programme (GPR) is provided by Accions School of Maritime and Logistics (ASML) in collaboration with Institute of Maritime and Education Training (IMETA) under the approval of Vanuatu Marine Services Limited. The entire programme shall meet the requirements of Maritime Administration of the Republic of Vanuatu. The GPR course is aimed to provide the students with basic entry-level knowledge in the maritime field as well as to prepare the students to serve as a general purpose rating on board a merchant ship. It comprises of aca-demics related to marine engineering, shipboard familiarisation along with Marine Workshop training, seamanship activities and Mandatory standards of training and watch keeping (STCW) and Security (DSD) certificate done at school. The course is strictly residential.
On successful completion of this course, the candidates will be eligible to join in Indian/Foreign Shipping companies as a Deck/Engine crew. With further sea service, they would be promoted as Motorman/Oil man, Fitter, Deck Serang, Able-Bodied Seamen, Bosun. They can also be promoted to officer level with certain service and qualification requirements on passing the examinations conducted by maritime authorities. Subsequently, they become Certified Engineer officers of Merchant Marine and are free to take up lucrative careers within the Shipping industry world-wide.

- Basic Safety Training, comprising of the following four modules:
1. Personal Survival Techniques
2. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
3. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
4. Elementary First Aid
5. Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties
Upon successful completion of this phase, students will be given a G.P.RATING Certificate issued by IMETA and ASML.
Minimum educational qualification is a pass in the S.S.L.C / 1Oth or its equivalent exam from any recognized board Or I.T.I.- 2 Year Engineering Trades from Govt. Approved Institute.
Medical Fitness and Eyesight Requirements
Candidates should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with eyesight 6/6 in better eye, 6/9 in other eye and with no colour blindness. All candidates should pass a medical examination by an ILO Doctor at the time of course commencement.
ASML conducts Aptitude, IQ, Reasoning and Psychometric tests followed by an interview.
